Herbs in Witchcraft

There are multiple ways you can incorporate herbs into your own personal spell work.

You can use herbs in your spell work by burning them (we recommend using charcoal disks in a fireproof bowl or cauldron in order to burn herbs safely), using them to dress a coloured spell candle, or by filling a glass jar or sachet with herbs and other corresponding items like crystals.

You can use herbs in the form of spell oils, either instead of or alongside the dried herbs themselves - these are covered in more detail below.

You can amplify the energy of your spells by incorporating other aspects that align with the planetary correspondence of your chosen herbs, such as by using a spell candle in a complementary colour or aligning your spell work with the days of the week.

Spell Oils

Spell oils are oil blends specifically designed for anointing and ritual use. Most spell oils consist of a base oil that has been infused with herbs, and they often have essential oils and even crystal chips added to help amplify your intention. Spell oils have their own advantages - they layer multiple correspondences, are fuss-free to work with, and even a small bottle can go a long way. For the best effects, you can combine spell oils and herbs together, such as using spell oils to stick herbs to your candles.

Here at Life’s a Witch, we formulate our very own spell oils for a whole range of intentions. These are formulated from scratch with a carefully selected blend of herbs, crystals and essential oils, and are infused in-house to add an extra touch of intention and magick to your spells.

Planetary Correspondence

As with many aspects of witchcraft, planetary correspondences play a big part in magickal herbalism, and this information can be a really useful starting point to identifying what a herb can be used for in your craft. Every herb you come across will have a planet or celestial body assigned to it as a “ruler”.

The majority of herbs used in witchcraft are ruled by the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn, sometimes with overlapping planetary rulers, so these are the categories that will be briefly covered below. The herbs ruled by each planet or celestial body will have distinct growing conditions, physical appearances and magickal correspondences.

Please note this is intended as a general guideline - not every herb ruled by the same planet will be equally effective for every associated spell, and we advise you check the individual product descriptions and/or search by category if you are looking for herbs to match a specific correspondence.
